There was once a day when Pete Sampras would have been the hands down favourite to win the US Open. In recent days, critics were saying that he would never win a tournament again, let alone a Grand Slam. But at about 7:45pm EST today, he proved them all wrong. In stunning fashion, Pistol Pete captured his record fourteenth Grand Slam title at the ripe old age of 31, defeating long-time friend and foe Andre Agassi 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Though I have never really been a big fan of Pete Sampras, I have newfound respect for him. He maintained his position that he wouldn't keep on playing if he didn't think he could win another major and today he fulfilled his promise. This just might be a great time for him to retire and be remembered as one of the greatest players in the game. |
