List of people who have directly contributed to me being up at 2:25AM on a Wednesday night: Bruce, Jam. Don't worry, I'll return the favour to you soon... | Sunday, October 26, 2003
Yay, we get an extra hour this weekend. To celebrate, I recalibrated all of the clocks in my place to time.gov. Instead of all my clocks being some arbitrary number of minutes ahead of the actual time (some were 7 minutes, some were 5, others were 3), I set them all to be about five minutes ahead. I did this all at about 10AM. An hour later, one of my clocks showed 9AM. The second hand had been running backwards! That's what I get for buying a $1 clock at Dollarama. | Thursday, October 16, 2003
"In 1992, this band appeared on Saturday Night Live as "Nevermind". What did they later go on to be known as?" Your first instinct is probably to say "Nirvana", and you would be right. Well, sort of. Analyze the question carefully. "What did they later go on to be known as?" implies that they were not known as Nirvana before this appearance, which is quite false. They released "Bleach" in 1989 under the name "Nirvana" and as far as I know, have not been known to the world as anything other than Nirvana, except possibly at this particular Saturday Night Live appearance. (Correct me if I'm wrong since I'm not exactly a huge Nirvana fan). Since the second half of the question seems to rule out Nirvana as answer, I put down some other grunge band that was likely to be influenced by Nirvana. Well, the question writers wouldn't admit their little logical folly and nullify the question. This was but one of the poorly worded questions at tonight's Hart House Trivia Challenge. We made some pretty stupid mistakes when answering and were in fourth place in the last round by one point. And since the top three teams get prizes, we really wanted to finish third. By some stroke of luck, we scored on more point than the third place team in the final round and ended in a tie for third place. We played a tie-breaker and we beat them by one point! Our team finished third. Woo-hoo. Go us. Now I'll go back to complaning about that Nirvana question... | Tuesday, October 14, 2003
Things not to do, especially in the same night: 1) read "Transcription Regulation in Prokaryotes" 2) eat a massive slice of cheesecake I have a big headache now and I'm not sure if it's from the sugar or from the big words. | Saturday, October 11, 2003
The Joy Division / New Order tribute tonight at Sneaky Dee's was okay. My ears are still hurting from the superloud speakers. And I stink of cigarette smoke. Too bad no one played Regret. Actually, I should rephrase that. Too bad no one finished playing Regret. The singer got pissed off at one of his bandmates and threw his guitar down and walked off the stage. I met two new people at the show. I had seen Marco at the Joy Division vs. New Order night at Zen lounge a few months ago but didn't talk to him. Tonight I decided to introduce myself to him and we had a little chat. The other guy, Frank played with his band Lake Holiday. I had been reading his Chromewaves blog and discovered I was at the Metric concert with him. And when I talked with him tonight, I discovered that we had both graduated from engineering at Waterloo. | Wednesday, October 08, 2003
I'm attempting to expand my musical tastes past U2, New Order, and other new wave bands so I've been going to many more concerts recently. May as well take advantage of the great music scene here in Toronto while I'm still young enough to do it. Concert attended in the past month or so: - Dandy Warhols - Interpol - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Metric Upcoming concerts: - The Stills - Echo and the Bunnymen* - Death Cab for Cutie - Broken Social Scene Actually, when I list some of my favourite new bands, they have a striking similarity to old bands. BRMC is Jesus and Mary Chain. Interpol is Joy Division reincarnate. Ladytron is New Order + Visage, Kraftwerk, Gary Numan. It's fitting that Ladytron and Interpol made a deal where they would mix one single for the other band. It's like the impossible has happened: New Order meets Joy Division. Everything old is new again. *Yes, I know Echo is a new wave band. So shoot me. | Monday, October 06, 2003

So some things that happened recently (not necessarily in chronological order): 1) being told by my supervisor that I should be putting in more hours 2) getting sick 3) finally cutting off the rest of my green hair 4) hanging out in Scarborough (just for you) 5) being told by my supervisor that "when I ask you to do something, I expect it to be done" 6) unexpectedly having to mark labs in the middle of this busy-ness while having a cold 7) "Lost In Translation" again 8) "The Italian Job" 9) Word on the Street 10) Metric Concert 11) Scribble.nu acting up for the past week so I have to post here this instead of daily drivel (for the remainder of this weekend) 12) watching Mamma Mia 13) hanging out in Scarborough, again! | Friday, October 03, 2003
