This is NOT a classmates.com advertisement Today I was cleaning up my apartment and I came across doubles of old* photographs. It made me quite nostalgic. And for some reason, I decided to make a new mix CD compilation of all the songs that I used to listen to before high school. Some of the tracks are embarrassing, but others have stood the test of time surprisingly well. The tracks are still in progress and I'll post the final version when complete. In the meantime, more nostalgia. Here are some old photographs of me from student identification cards in high school. The Door Prize I was walking south along Spadina through Chinatown earlier this afternoon. All of a sudden, I hear a high pitched scream of fright followed by a sound of solid collision, and concluding with shattered glass raining onto the pavement. All this before I could turn my head to see what actually happened. I see a woman on her bicycle, visibly stunned, barely standing, the seat of her bicycle off on an angle. Beside her, a blue Mercedes coupe, its door open stripped of its glass. The door prize had been won! I've seen it nearly happen many times in the past, and I've almost been both a giver and receiver, but this was the first time the jackpot was hit! I was in shock as were the other pedestrians. I didn't know what to do. Eventually, I asked the cyclist if she was okay. The two Chinese women in the car asked if she was okay and discussed between themselves some things about insurance. A few more moments passed as the cyclist regrouped and she finally resumed and rode off. Let this be a lesson children. Always look for cyclists when opening your car door. And if you're cyclist, never ever trust cars that are pulled over to the side. Ring your bell and steer clear of the door, but always anticipate a stupid person opening the door at the exact time you're passing by. This will help to reduce the number of door prizes given up every year. And now you know, and knowing is half the battle. | Wednesday, December 10, 2003
This past weekend I watched both "Job: The Hip Hop Saga" and "Love Actually". Job lived up to all the hype that was generated during the fringe fest. The lyrics we're quite sharp and witty. It was a tad difficult to understand at times due to its hip-hoppiness, but in my opinion still easier to catch than the Bard. Too bad I didn't brush up on the story of Job in my Incomplete Education before seeing it. I totally recommend the show to anyone. It's still playing for a few more days in Toronto. Catch it before it leaves town. Love Actually lived up too all the reviews. *SPOILER WARNING* It was a cutesy movie, but had way too many loosely intertwined plots. What was the point of half of them? With all the talk of Claudia Schiffer, you'd think they'd actually have her play herself when she finally did make an appearance. Nada. She played some random single mom that Liam Neeson eventually hooked up with in the end. And who really cares for Shannon Elizabeth and Denise Richards. Scarlett Johansson is way hotter than both of them combined. And as for Keira Knightley, sorry, but my heart is still with Natalie Portman especially since I've been a fan since "The Professional". At least the music selection was decent with Dido, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Joni Mitchell. And *bah* I don't think I'll ever like Hugh Grant. Now excuse me as I cough my throat into oblivion. | Monday, December 08, 2003
Run is one of my favourite New Order songs that you may have never heard. For your benefit, here are some of the lyrics that I love: Well what’s the use in complaining When you’ve got what you don’t need Anyone would think you were hardened too What do you want me to believe Now go on and listen to the song. I wish I could do the same, but I'm trapped at school without the song handy. | Thursday, December 04, 2003
"how does it feel / when you're drinking in the sun / all you've got to believe / sunkist is the one" Can you believe that Bernard Sumner actually recorded these lines for a Sunkist commercial? I remember seeing the video for it on "New Order Story". It's a must see for any New Order fan. Absolutely ridiculous. I can't help but laugh when I think about it. | Monday, December 01, 2003
For some odd reason, I was trying to recall a little bit of my undergrad lore. At Waterloo, the Engineering students have this sacred drink. I was taking the iced tea out of my refridgerator when the flashback hit. Q-tips, hard hats, alcool. I couldn't remember what it was called. Bent? No, that wasn't it. I searched Google. Couldn't find it. That's when I remembered that I still had my Frosh guide. All the details were in there. There are good sections in the book that instruct how to pour beer properly among other things. And then I stumbled upon it. Batch!. My quest was complete. What is your name? Pi What is your quest? To find the name of the drink sacred to Waterloo Engineers What is the purpose? Nostalgia, pure nostalgia | |
