Off On A Tangent

The favourite essay I've written so far. This the culmination of all of my life experiences. This isn't something that I just came up with in the middle of the night and had to hand it in for school. I wrote it in my spare time. Some of you may think that it's off the wall or a joke, but I'm completely serious about this theory. I fully agree with all the arguments I put forth in this essay.

How did I come to such a bizarre realization of life you may ask?!? To tell you the truth, I was being a geek and reading ahead in my grade 12 physics textbook to the section of quantum mechanics since it was much more interesting than Newtonian mechanics. I came across the Compton Effect and was quite marvelled at the fact that a massless photon could have momentum. I was aware of the wave-particle duality of light and the concept of matter-energy equivlaence and immediately pondered the fact of matter having an associated wavelength. To my pleasant surprise, the next page contained the section on de Broglie wavelengths. To my dismay, he had already won the Nobel prize for his theory. All matter has an associated wavelength. Pooling my limited knowledge of modern physics, I recognized that waves are merely energy and energy is merely matter and all matter is a wave. It all tied together. From that point on, I applied this "wave" nature of thinking to every natural phenomena I could see. And the rest, as they say, is history. Appreciate the beauty of this theory. You may read about it in a scientific journal one day.

And one last request. It has been brought to my attention that "Life is a Sine Wave" replaces the words of a certain Tom Cochrane song rather well. Please, please, please don't sing it. It drives me insane to here these sacred words abused like that. Thank you for your cooperation.

Read it and you will find that my ideas are not Off On A Tangent.

The Infinite Mind

I have always been a firm believer in the power of the human mind. I regard it as the most powerful weapon on Earth, in any time period. However, this power can be used for both good and evil. I've often found that during a test or exam, I come across a question that is new and interesting, and I haven't the faintest idea what to do. I start working away at it and something just strikes you in your mind. A way of seeing the problem that you never say before, giving you a complete understanding of the solution. This is especially prevalent in high school mathematics courses. Too bad I couldn't do that as much here at university. I guess I should study more rather than rely on my intuition to help me through school. Oh well, I successfully completed my first year at Waterloo. Maybe next year, I'll recapture the essence of The Infinite Mind.

Why Newton Ain't No Shakespeare

I'm good at math. I think in terms of numbers and algorithms and all that scientific stuff. I'm quite good at it. However, I am lacking in terms of my English proficiency. Although some of my friends consider me a fairly decent writer, it doesn't even compare to my ability to manipulate numbers and computer programs. Some people may say that I'm smart because of that. However, I think that people who excel at writing are also smart. I've tried to come up with reasons why I'm so much better at one than the other. This essay was written to contrast and compare the areas of mathematics and English. Again, this is based on my personal experience. Maybe I will convince you Why Newton Ain't No Shakespeare

How To Write An Essay About Absolutely Nothing

Written as a group project for my OAC English class. I never would have thought that so many people could put forth such a large effort and write so much about nothing. This is one of the funniest essays I've ever written. I distinctly remember doing exactly what is described in the essay in order to write the essay. We used the dictionary and thesaurus to the max for this one. I also love the sarcasm and the way it describes itself so great. I have to give a lot of credit to my group members for this one. They came up with some great ideas. Find out How To Write An Essay About Absolutely Nothing.

The Faucet Revolution

This article was an entry for the "Beynon Memorial Humanitarian Award" in which they wanted ideas about the topic "Technology is becoming obsolete at an increasingly rapid rate. What is the impact of accelerating obsolescence on the quality of life for members of society?" (No, I didn't win the $400 prize:). See if you were part of The Faucet Revolution.

Everybody Wants To Rule The World

This is a previously unpublished article that was orginally to appear in issue 2 of the Winter 1999 edition of the Iron Warrior. I actually really liked this article but the editor-in-chief decided not to publish it due to space restrictions and the fact that I already had my regular Take A Zhance and some poetry in that issue. I think you'll find this comparison of engineering and arts very intriguing, Find out why Everybody Wants To Rule The World.

In The Beginning: A Radio Play

Creation is the oldest and most universal myth. Every religion seems to have a take on how the universe began. In grade 11, I wrote a parody of the Judeo-Christian version of creation based on the characters Jim and Bob. I lost my original story somewhere along the line switching from DOS and WordPerfect on our old 386 to Windows and Word on our brand new 486 (way back when). I had a sudden urge to rewrite, but this time in the format of a radio play since it consisted largely of dialogue. I left it incomplete for the greater part of two years since I couldn't find a satisfactory ending until recently. I've had both positive and negative reviews of the ending so I don't know what to do with it now. I'd like your opnion. Get going and find out what happened In The Beginning. Beware, it is heavily influenced by "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams.
